Moisture
The underside needs attention.
After sleep, lift, fold, or stand the shikibuton so moisture can leave both the bedding and the surface beneath it.
Direct floor use requires extra care. Use a breathable moisture-control layer and check both the shikibuton and the floor regularly.
Cleaning
Do not machine-wash the whole shikibuton.
Use a removable sheet or cover for routine washing. For spills, address the area promptly and let it dry completely.
For heavy soiling, consult a cleaner familiar with futon bedding. Do not soak or machine-wash the complete shikibuton.
Turning
Rotate and turn to spread normal settling.
Use both sides and rotate the bedding periodically. This helps distribute pressure and supports a more even working life.
Can I leave a shikibuton on the floor all day?
It is better to fold, raise, or air it regularly so moisture does not remain trapped underneath.
Can I use a dehumidifier?
Yes, a dehumidifier can help in humid rooms, but it does not replace lifting and airing the bedding itself.
