Finland · Ryokan futon at home
Bring the ryokan futon routine into an everyday room.
What you slept on
A ryokan futon is usually a full bedding set, with the shikibuton as the mattress layer.
In a Japanese inn, staff often lay out the bedding after dinner and put it away again in the morning. The mattress layer is the shikibuton: a foldable sleeping surface used close to the floor.
HIMARI and SORA are made and finished in our own workshop in Oyama, Tochigi by a bedding maker whose family business began in 1873.
At home
Lay it on a firm, level, breathable surface.
Tatami is the traditional base. It is firm enough for support and lets the room keep the low profile many travelers remember from a washitsu room.
A clean wood floor can work when moisture is managed. Use a breathable layer underneath, lift the shikibuton after sleep, and check the floor and underside regularly.
A bed frame can also work when it is flat, stable, firm, and ventilated. Avoid soft sagging bases because the shikibuton needs even support across its full length and width.
Choosing
Choose HIMARI or SORA by the feel you want every night.
HIMARI is the standard shikibuton Japanese homes use every day. It has approx. 10 cm of loft, a balanced firm feel, and size choices for one sleeper or a wider solo surface.
SORA keeps the same firm support idea and adds more depth. It has approx. 12 cm of loft and a 50% wool blend for side sleepers and sleepers used to a Western mattress.
Daily care
Air it, turn it, and let the room dry.
A shikibuton is not meant to stay sealed flat against the floor. After sleep, fold, stand, or lift it so air reaches both the bedding and the surface underneath.
Turn it periodically and let both sides dry. In humid rooms, a moisture-control layer and a dehumidifier can help, but they do not replace regular airing.

Is this the same kind of futon used in Japanese ryokan?
Yes. The shikibuton is the mattress layer of the futon bedding many travelers sleep on at ryokan, onsen inns, and minshuku. HIMARI and SORA are made in our own workshop in Oyama, Tochigi.
Do I need tatami at home?
No. Tatami is traditional, but a clean, firm, level, ventilated surface can also work. Moisture care becomes more important on wood floors and modern bed frames.
Which model is closer to the futon I slept on in Japan?
Choose HIMARI for the standard Japanese home feel: firm, level, and about 10 cm of loft. Choose SORA if you want more depth under the shoulders and hips, especially as a side sleeper or someone used to a Western mattress.
