For children old enough for an ordinary bed, a shikibuton can be a practical choice: it lies low on the floor, so there is no bed to fall from, and it folds away to free the room for play during the day. It is not designed as an infant or crib mattress; for babies, follow your local safe-sleep guidance and use a product made for infants.
Size and handling
The 100 cm Japanese Standard Single suits most children’s rooms. HIMARI 日葵 in 100 cm weighs approx. 5 kg and folds into thirds, so it is easy to lift and store. Two shikibuton can also be laid side by side for siblings or sleepovers.
Keeping it clean
- Use a removable, washable cover, and a protector underneath it if accidents are likely.
- Blot and spot-clean spills straight away, then dry the area completely.
- Air the shikibuton more often than an adult’s, and keep the floor beneath it dry.
