Is a Japanese shikibuton a firm floor mattress?

HIMARI is the firmer model: approx. 10 cm with an approx. 8 cm firm polyester core and 25% wool-blend filling. SORA is approx. 12 cm with a 50% wool blend.

Yes. A traditional shikibuton is firmer and thinner than a typical Western spring or foam mattress. HIMARI is OFUTON KOBO’s firmer model: approx. 10 cm thick, with an approx. 8 cm firm polyester support core developed in-house beneath wool-blend filling, for a balanced firm feel. SORA is fuller, at approx. 12 cm, with a balanced medium feel.

How firm, compared with what

Firm does not mean hard. In HIMARI 日葵, the support core holds the body evenly while the wool-blend filling softens the contact surface. SORA 宙 adds loft and a 50% premium wool blend for fuller cushioning. Both are supportive floor mattresses rather than soft toppers. Compared with a thick Western mattress, a shikibuton is thinner and firmer: you stay closer to the floor, and a memory-foam mattress will feel softer and slower to respond than either model.

Comfort and health

A shikibuton is bedding, not a medical device. OFUTON KOBO makes no claim that HIMARI or SORA prevents, treats or relieves back pain or any other condition. Comfort is individual; if you have a back condition, ask a healthcare professional what kind of sleep surface suits you.

Getting the intended feel

  • Lay it on a firm, level surface; a soft base underneath changes how it feels.
  • HIMARI is compressed for international delivery: after opening, lay it flat in a well-ventilated room for approximately 8 to 12 hours so the loft can relax.
  • Turn and rotate it regularly so it wears evenly.
