Four months in
I have only been here four months — one of the workshop’s newer members. My daily rotation covers the multi-head quilting machine (the diamond-pattern quilting of shikibuton) and the inner-cotton roll-shaping process, and I also work the pillow-making and futon-inspection posts. The time is short, but my colleagues have already made me feel this is a place worth staying for the long term.
The yardstick of “if I had bought it”
I ask myself how I would feel if this were the futon I had ordered. If I have any doubt about the finish, I ask an experienced colleague to check it with me.
Wanting to learn more
I am interested in the qualifications, but my first priority is learning the practical work. I can operate the quilting machine, although I still ask experienced colleagues for help with skipped stitches or loose thread. I want to become a little more capable each month.
A workshop that makes you want to stay
Our colleagues help one another, often before anyone has to ask. Together with clear standards for the work, that makes this a workshop where I want to stay and keep learning.
