The details behind a customer’s order
My daily work is the shipping preparation of customer orders, inquiry and review replies, and the ordering of light bedding. It sounds clerical, but behind every order is a particular customer — perhaps buying for a newly married daughter, perhaps for themselves moving into a new home, perhaps a lighter futon for an aging parent. Understanding these scenes is what lets a reply land right.
Packing with heart
Many of the workshop’s customers “await the arrival of this one shikibuton.” So when packing I take special care — where the delivery slip is affixed, the angle of the outer-box seal, the fill density of the inner cushioning. The moment the package is opened is when the customer’s impression of the workshop forms. I want that moment to be “this workshop really cares.”
A “short sleeper”’s reflection
I used to be a “short sleeper” myself — thinking five or six hours was enough. After learning the science of sleep while preparing for the Certified Sleep & Bedding Advisor, I began to look anew at my own sleep habits. Sleep is an underrated foundation of health. After that reflection, the tone of my replies to customers changed too — no longer “answering from the manual,” but “having thought it through from your position as well.”
Responsiveness to the unexpected
When the unexpected arises, our colleagues react fast — fast opinions, fast decisions, fast execution. The link between the production floor and the office is not run by process but by everyone’s shared agreement on the workshop’s goal. That alignment is one of the most valuable working principles passed through the family business.
