Shikibuton, not sofa bed
A sleeping layer built for floor-level living.
Outside Japan, “futon” in English often means a convertible sofa. A Japanese shikibuton is different: it is the mattress layer of futon bedding. It rests on tatami, a suitable platform, a ventilated frame, or a carefully managed hard floor, then folds for airing and storage.
Shikibuton is also spelled shikifuton or shiki futon in English. We use shikibuton for the Japanese bedding that is laid out for sleep, then aired and folded when the room returns to daytime use.

The floor is part of the bedding system.
Warmth and humidity move between the sleeper, shikibuton, and base. A firm surface alone is not enough: check for condensation, air both sides, wash removable sheets separately, and never machine-wash or soak the complete shikibuton.

Is an OFUTON KOBO shikibuton made in Japan?
Yes. HIMARI and SORA are made and finished in our own workshop in Oyama, Tochigi, Japan by a bedding maker whose roots began in 1873.
How is it shipped?
Shipping included. We process and ship your order within 2 business days (Japan time). Japan Post EMS delivery usually takes about 10 to 14 days after dispatch.
Are the sizes the same as Single or Queen?
No. OFUTON KOBO uses Japanese centimetre dimensions. Inch values are approximate references, so measure the intended floor, platform, or frame before ordering.
Which model feels firmer?
HIMARI has the standard firm feel used in Japanese homes, with approx. 10 cm of loft. SORA keeps firm support underneath but adds more depth, with approx. 12 cm of loft.
Can I place it directly on a floor in Taiwan?
A hard floor can work, but it does not breathe like tatami. Use a suitable moisture-control layer, lift the shikibuton after sleep, and check both the underside and floor regularly.
How should I air and dry it?
After sleep, lift, fold, or stand the shikibuton so air reaches both sides and the surface underneath. Turn it periodically and keep the base dry.
